About Markel International

Markel is a global speciality insurance provider with a truly people-first approach

At Markel take great pride in what we do. To us, insurance isn’t just a policy - it’s a vital promise that gives people and businesses the confidence to move forward, each and every day. Here, you’ll find exceptional people, without the ego. People who’ll bring out your best, and support you at every step, because it’s who we are and the secret to our success. We’ve come a long way since Sam Markel dreamed big in 1930, but in our eyes, our journey is just getting started.

Markel International is made up of two core divisions: Wholesale and National Markets, through these we offer innovative products and services. Our international business is located throughout UK, Europe, Canada and Asia Pacific and is led by Andrew McMellin.

Divisions at Markel International: National Markets and Wholesale

  • The Wholesale division trades globally with medium to large businesses and offer larger premiums and limits. With offices around the world, Markel's Wholesale division encompasses three underwriting divisions- Marine and Energy; Professional, Financial Risks and Cyber; and Specialty- alongside an award-winning Claims team, as well as dedicated Operations and Strategic Business Development teams. With many of their risks written through Lloyd’s of London marketplace, their ambition is to become the best speciality insurer out there.
  • The National Market divisions trades locally with SMEs in order to deliver specialist solutions for individuals, professionals and businesses. Markel’s National Markets is the division within Markel International that is responsible for accessing ‘local’ business that tends not to leave a country’s borders. The National Markets division is sub-divided into three regions, UK, Canada and Continental Europe.

Our Culture and Values

At Markel, we believe that what we do really matters. And that every one of us has the power to make a difference.

Everything we do comes out of the Markel Style. These 214 words are a timeless statement of our mission. It’s our north star, and out of that comes our brand vision.

WE'RE ALL ABOUT PEOPLE

WE WIN TOGETHER

WE STRIVE FOR BETTER
Aiming for excellence and finding a better way of doing things is our passion.

WE ENJOY THE EVERYDAY
We’re dedicated to our work but always keep a sense of humor and leave our egos at the door.

WE THINK FURTHER
Acting in service of customers, partners, employees, and communities is how we want to build a lasting impact.

Hiring Process

At Markel, we understand the growing potential of AI in the workplace. While the use of AI in the application process is permitted to check for grammar and spelling, we encourage applications to be completed by yourself as much as possible, so that the information submitted is accurate and truthful.

For transparency, we use AI technology in some of our screening processes. This includes the use of AI interview technology, which helps us review more applications, fairly and consistently score responses and offers fast and flexible options for applicants. These processes have been extensively tested, meaning we are confident in the technology’s compliance with GDPR and UK data privacy requirements as well as bias mitigation and accessibility ethics. Should you have concerns over the use of AI technology in your application, please notify a member of the Markel Recruitment team at earlycareers@markel.com.

There will be four stages to the hiring process:

Online Application

  • Firstly, you’ll need to complete an online application form. It only takes 30 seconds to register your interest and we’ll support you throughout the full application process.

Pre-recorded Video Interview

  • Our assessors will review your application and, if you’ve met the requirements, you'll be invited to a pre-recorded video interview. You’ll be sent a link with instructions to record and submit your answers.

Telephone Interview

  • The following stage is a telephone interview which will consist of motivational and competency-based questions. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate your strengths, achievements and experiences through the examples that you provide.

Final Assessment Day

  • The final stage of the process will be an invitation to an in-person assessment centre. The graduate and intern assessment centres will take place in March & April 2026. The exact date will depend on the role you have applied for.
  • The assessment centres will include several individual and group activities. We want to set you up for success and so we’ll send you an information pack ahead of the assessment centre and invite you to a preparation call, so you’ll know what to prepare for. Assessment centres are also a great way for you to learn about who we are and to understand if we are a good fit for you, so please feel free to ask questions!
  • Occasionally, candidates are booked in for a final chat after the assessment day and then the hiring managers will then make their decisions and offers are made! Successful candidates will then start on their programme in either July or September 2026 (depending on your programme). For those that are unsuccessful, we will give you a call to give you feedback to help you with your future job search.
